In February, violence broke out in Madagascar’s capital city, Antananarivo, when supporters of opposition leader Andry Rajoelina marched on government offices in a bid to oust President Marc Ravalomanana, who had been democratically elected in 2006. Rajoelina accused the president of being a tyrant who misspent public money. Security forces opened fire on the demonstrators, killing some 28 people. In the ensuing weeks, rioting broke out. In March, a faction of the army mutinied, and under a new general the military forces gave their support to Rajoelina. Ravalomanana was removed from power and Andry Rajoelina declared himself president.

Rajoelina supporters run from tear gas following a rally in Antananarivo, on 16 February.
