What kind of Year was 2021?
The climate crisis again stood out as an urgent concern in 2021, with photographers covering stories not only of natural disasters and wildfires, but also solutions to environmental issues. Stories across all regions focused on people’s struggles for fundamental rights, on private grief and communal anger – as well as
on heartfelt personal moments and uplifting stories that speak about global issues. Preserving indigenous knowledge and culture also emerged as a concern, as did access to education.
Photographers documented these issues so that you, the audience, can reflect on them. Photographs and our reactions to them can be subjective. Photographers choose what to show, and how to portray it.
As individual viewers we make con- nections with our own backgrounds, and have the power (and responsibili- ty) to look actively: to give meaning to the photograph.
Photographs and stories can be interpreted in many ways, and every photograph and story can lead to different understandings.
Regional Model
For the first time, six regional juries and a global jury selected the winning photographs across six regions, ensuring different voices are heard and giving a mix of views both from a local and an international perspective.
