In the Shadow of Wounded Knee
The Oglala Lakota people of the Pine Ridge reservation in Southakota live near the site of the massacre of over 250 Lakota Sioux that took place at Wounded Knee Creek on 29 December 1890 . They recount a history of violated treaties and broken promises on the part of successive US governments.
The Oglala concept of tiospaye—the unity of the extended family—means that homes are often overcrowded, especially considering the severe housing shortage in Pine Ridge. Amid a resurgence of Indigenous traditions, the Oglala Lakota Artspace opened on the reservation in May 2023. One of its artists-in-residence described the project as "a beacon of hope, a safe, welcoming space where community members excel".
