Omo Change

24 July 2011 - 24 November 2017

The Gibe III Dam across the Omo River in Ethiopia impacts not only people living along the Omo Valley, but those around Lake Turkana (into which the Omo empties) in Kenya. People of eight different ethnicities live along the valley in delicate balance with the environment, reliant on the river for food security. The Ethiopian government sees the dam as providing valuable hydroelectric power, water for large-scale agriculture, and as a tourist attraction, and disputes claims of negative environmental impact. Critics point to diminishing biodiversity, falling water levels in Lake Turkana, the reduction of fertile soil deposited by annual natural floods, and the displacement of traditional peoples. The photographer visited the Omo Valley with the aim of producing a meditation on how investments might put the human-environment balance at risk.
